When to Use User Research

You need user research when you’re building something new, entering a new market, or fundamentally changing your product’s direction:

Before product-market fit: If you’re working on a new product or major feature, you need user research to validate that you’re solving a real problem. Airbnb’s early story—they made $30,000 selling cereal boxes to fund the initial platform—demonstrates a crude form of this. More systematically, teams like Stripe spent years doing developer interviews to understand pain points before building their payments infrastructure.

When entering unfamiliar territory: When Spotify launched Podcasting, they didn’t just build a podcast player and test usability. Your team ideates solutions and builds low-fidelity mockups. You test those with usability testing, iterating based on feedback. You build a higher-fidelity prototype and test again. You launch and monitor analytics. You conduct follow-up user research to see if the solution actually addressed the underlying need.

The two practices create a feedback loop. Usability testing on your current solution might surface that users don’t understand a feature—questioning the original research assumptions. That prompts new user research to understand the gap between your solution and user mental models.
